MIDDLEBURG - A Middleburg man shot and killed his girlfriend and then himself Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The bodies were discovered after the woman's young daughter heard the gunshots and alerted neighbors.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said George Chaney, 49, and Kathryn Jackson, 45, had been dating for about seven years. For the past two years, they lived in the house in a quiet neighborhood off of County Road 220.
"George told me she was moving out, she was getting married to someone else," neighbor Danny Powers said about a conversation he had Wednesday with Chaney.
Deputies had been called to the one-story brick house several times in recent weeks, said Sgt. Marty Cotchaleovitch - most recently when Chaney reported that a gun was stolen during a break-in.
