SAN DIEGO — The county Medical Examiner's office today identified the 22-year-old woman fatally shot Friday by her ex-boyfriend, who then killed himself in the College Area of San Diego.

Authorities said Michel David, who had just graduated from San Diego State University, was shot by Daniel Shoemake, 21. An autopsy was tentatively scheduled for today.

Officers were sent to investigate reports of gunfire and people yelling at Gilbert Drive and 55th Street shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

When they arrived they found David suffering from several gunshot wounds lying in the street. There was an assault rifle on the ground next to her, Rooney said.

She was taken to a hospital where she died at 10:29 a.m.

Officers then found Shoemake dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a silver Ford Ranger that was parked across from David's apartment building. A handgun also was in the truck, Rooney said.

It appeared Shoemake had killed David with the assault rifle and then used the handgun on himself, Rooney said.

The two had dated for several years but were no longer a couple, Rooney said.

David was living with a roommate who was home at the time and came out after hearing the shots to find her friend mortally wounded.

Rooney said they had no eye witnesses to the shooting.

Jerian Cathey, 32, who was visiting a friend at the apartment complex, said she saw David’s purse and its contents spilled on a walkway in a pool of blood. A hole was blasted in the building in front of the stairs, Cathey said.

A patrol officer headed to the shooting collided with a red sport utility vehicle, which was knocked onto its side, nearby at 55th Street and El Cajon Boulevard. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
