Hernandez and the child's mother are separated,

A 20-year-old Phoenix man has been arrested and accused of fatally shaking his 3-month-old son to stop him from crying.

Francisco Hernandez Sr. was booked on a count each of first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of his child, Francisco Jr.

Phoenix Police and Fire crews responded about 6 a.m. Monday to the 1700 block of West Corona Avenue, just south of Broadway Road, on a call of an injured child, according to a statement issued by Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos.

Police said Hernandez and the child's mother are separated, and the mother was not present at the time of the incident.

Hernandez Sr. found the child was unresponsive after he apparently shook him and immediately called authorities, Martos said. He was interviewed by detectives and arrested Thursday.

The baby died Wednesday as a result of severe bleeding to his brain, known as "Shaken Baby Syndrome," Martos said.
